Liver & Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathology Fellowship
About Our Fellowship
The Department of Pathology & Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital offers a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Liver & Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathology Fellowship for physicians who have completed anatomic pathology training and seek advanced subspecialty expertise in hepatobiliary and GI pathology.
The Liver & GI Pathology Fellowship offers one position each academic year and provides advanced training in the diagnosis of diseases affecting the liver, GI tract and pancreatobiliary system. Fellows develop expertise in medical liver disease, transplant hepatopathology, hepatic neoplasms, luminal GI pathology, pancreatobiliary pathology, dysplasia and GI neoplasia, as well as inflammatory and infectious GI disorders. Training emphasizes clinicopathologic correlation and integration of histologic findings with relevant clinical, radiologic, endoscopic and laboratory data.
Houston Methodist Hospital is located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the largest medical complex in the world. As the flagship of Houston Methodist’s eight-hospital health system, Houston Methodist Hospital provides comprehensive primary and tertiary care services, including a high-volume transplant program and nationally recognized gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary services.
We also provide a high-volume and diverse case mix, allowing fellows to develop strong diagnostic expertise across the spectrum of hepatobiliary and GI pathology. Approximate annual case volumes include 32,910 gastrointestinal biopsies, 2,340 medical liver biopsies, 549 liver resections, 2,563 gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary surgical resections, 469 cytology specimens and 380 frozen section consultations. As a fellow, you will participate in gross examination of surgical specimens, frozen section interpretation, biopsy and resection sign-out, and consultation case review. Cases are reviewed and signed out in a mentored, one-on-one format with subspecialty faculty. Our fellows also participate in multidisciplinary clinical conferences where pathology findings are integrated with clinical management. These include hepatobiliary tumor board, gastrointestinal oncology conferences, transplant pathology discussions and other interdisciplinary meetings.
The fellowship offers research and scholarly activity using the Houston Methodist Research Institute, a major biomedical research center supporting clinical and translational research. Our fellows are encouraged to participate in scholarly activities and may collaborate with faculty on clinical or translational research projects. You will be supported when presenting your work at national meetings and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
