Hematopathology Fellowship

Houston Methodist Hospital, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College and Texas A&M Medical College, offers an ACGME-accredited Hematopathology Fellowship training program to physicians who have completed pathology specialty training and are interested in pursuing a career in the subspecialty of hematopathology and related research. Our program offers experience to provide broad exposure to the evaluation of hematopathological diseases, with advanced technology used to ensure accurate diagnoses. 

Four (4) one-year fellowship positions are available each academic year for physicians interested in board certification in hematopathology. Training will include experience in bone marrow and lymph node pathology, immunophenotyping by flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, coagulation and other areas of laboratory hematology. The program includes an in-depth hematology sign-out rotation and a cytogenetics rotation at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and a pediatric hematology rotation at Texas Children’s Hospital. Fellows present case conferences and teach pathology residents, medical students and clinical fellows. Laboratory management and administrative experience during the program also provide the fellows with an adequate background to understand the organization and operation of a hematopathology laboratory.

During the fellowship it is anticipated that one or more clinical research projects will be completed during the training. State-of-the-art technologies including next-generation sequencing, 8-color flow cytometry and fluorescence-activated cell sorting are available for fellows interested in pursuing an academic career. The teaching faculty in the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist are internationally renowned with expertise in major subspecialty areas of both anatomic and clinical pathology. Our hematopathology fellowship is staffed by 12 board-certified hematopathologists at Houston Methodist, and multiple board-certified hematopathologists at the other rotating institutions.

Candidates must be board certified or board eligible in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology. Candidates must be eligible for a Texas Physician-In-Training Permit or hold a full physician Texas licensure.

This Fellowship participates in the NRMP Match program with an application deadline of Jan. 1 of the previous year. Applications are accepted all year round and candidates can apply before registering with NRMP.
