Expanding Medical Education to Houston Methodist The Woodlands

Examine how Houston Methodist is expanding graduate medical education in The Woodlands, launching internal medicine residency training and building subspecialty fellowships.

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital was ranked No. 1 among Complex Care Medical Systems for high-quality care by Vizient in both 2021 and 2022.

An anonymous philanthropic donation of $10 million — the largest donation received by any hospital in the Houston Methodist system — was received to support the expansion of the academic medical program at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. This is also the first instance where a Texas Medical Center institution will sponsor an academic medical program in one of the community hospitals. Proposed fellowships include Cardiovascular Diseases, Orthopedic Surgery, Pulmonary Critical Care and Sports Medicine.

“Expanding Graduate Medical Education to our regional campuses brings many opportunities to further the education mission of Houston Methodist. We are thrilled to welcome the inaugural class of Internal Medicine residents to Houston Methodist Hospital at The Woodlands,” said Lara Colton, MD, MEd, FACP, Associate Professor, Clinical Medicine, Houston Methodist. “This incredibly generous donation will support the future development of fellowships to advance specialty care to the surrounding community and promote the academic culture of the hospital.”
