Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship
The Houston Methodist Hospital Advanced Endoscopy (AE) Fellowship is led by Dr. Thomas McCarty, MD, and a team of interventional endoscopists. The program provides fellows with 12 months of specialized training in the treatment and management of complex gastroenterology diseases that require advanced endoscopy skills.
Goals of the fellowship program are:
- Train qualified applicants in tertiary consultative care and long-term management of gastrointestinal malignancies, pancreatobiliary diseases and benign gastrointestinal diseases
- Provide supervised research experience in optimal patient care projects.
The AE fellow works alongside nine GI fellows, one IBD fellow, and one transplant hepatology fellow, as well as interact with residents and other visiting fellows. Additionally, the AE fellow will participate in clerkships. Training takes place within the Texas Medical Center campus at the Houston Methodist Hospital.

Eligibility & Application
The AE Fellowship adheres to the guidelines outlined in Procedure GME03 by the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC). To participate in our one-year non-Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) AE Fellowship, all applicants must meet the following requirements:
Criteria
- Graduate of a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)-accredited medical school in the US or Canada, or an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) medical school outside the US and Canada with a current valid ECFMG certificate
- Must have completed and passed all three United States Medical Licensing Examinations; DO graduates must have taken and passed all three steps of COMLEX-USA.
- Graduate of an ACGME-accredited or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited three-year internal medicine training program
- Graduate of an ACGME-accredited or RCPSC-accredited three-year gastroenterology training program (prior to starting AE fellowship)
- American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)-board certified in internal medicine and board-eligible in gastroenterology by completion of gastroenterology fellowship
- US citizen or foreign national with permanent US residence status. The fellowship program is not able to sponsor H1B employment-based visas
- Must have a full Texas Medical Board License by the date of hire
All applicants must submit a GME application form, curriculum vitae, and personal statement or equivalent documents as stated in the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Advanced Endoscopy Matching Program. The applicant must solicit three letters of recommendation to be sent directly from the evaluator to the program or ASGE formal match program.
Applicants who appear to be strong candidates for the fellowship will be invited for an interview, during which time they will meet with the faculty members and be given a tour of the facilities (if interviewing in person). All faculty members who interview the applicant will complete an evaluation form, rating the applicant in terms of their fit with the program goals.

Applicant Selection
The AE Fellowship will participate in the ASGE formal match program in future recruitment years (AY 2026 and onwards).
Candidates who are ranked in the ASGE match program have agreed to a binding commitment to enter training and meet the eligibility requirements as stated above.
