Centennial Leadership Lecture

John F. Bookout, a legendary oil industry executive, prominent Houston civic leader and generous benefactor to Houston Methodist, began his volunteer service on the Houston Methodist Board of Directors in 1979. As chairman of the board from February 1991 to January 2007, Mr. Bookout’s visionary leadership was pivotal in Houston Methodist’s transformation into a thriving independent academic medical center with Weill Cornell Medicine as its primary medical school affiliate, commencement of the Houston Methodist-sponsored residency and fellowship program, and formation of the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Mr. Bookout’s beneficence has advanced clinical excellence and was instrumental in launching the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education (MITIESM).

Throughout his career, from his decorated service as a World War II bomber pilot to his renowned tenure as CEO of Shell Oil Company (1976-1988), Mr. Bookout has mastered his every endeavor. His wise and innovative leadership for 16 years as chairman of Houston Methodist continues to contribute immeasurably to advancements in health care for future generations.

Mr. Bookout’s approach to leadership and inclusion seeks to give everyone a voice and everyone a seat at the table.

We also honored both current and past members of our boards – including members of the Houston Methodist Hospital Board, the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation Board, and the Houston Methodist Research Institute Board – and the six boards that serve our Community Hospitals.
