Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is pleased to welcome board-certified neurosurgeon, Derrick Sun, M.D., who will be opening a new practice – Houston Methodist Department of Neurosurgery at Sugar Land – in May.

Sun specializes in a wide range of neurosurgery conditions and procedures, including minimally invasive spine surgery; complex revision/reconstructive spine surgery; artificial disc replacement; brain and spinal trauma and tumors; craniocervical junction disorders; spinal deformities; and degenerative diseases affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.

Sun earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his internship and residency in neurosurgery at the University of Colorado Hospitals in Aurora, where he was elected into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He pursued a fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. This makes Dr. Sun one of a handful of surgeons in the country with dual neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgery training.

He comes to Houston Methodist Sugar Land from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he is an assistant professor of neurosurgery and served as medical director of neurosurgery for UT Health Physicians.

“I am excited to return to Sugar Land, where I grew up, to serve patients in my hometown as a member of the staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land, which has a strong reputation for advanced care in neurosurgery,” said Sun. “I take pride in treating patients like I would treat my own family members.”

Sun’s office is on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land campus in Medical Office Building 3, 16605 Southwest Freeway, Suite 220. To schedule an appointment, call 281.946.2662.
