Providing dedicated options for liver disease patients

The Sherrie and Alan Conover Center for Liver Disease & Transplantation at Houston Methodist Hospital cares for complex liver disease patients who may require a range of services from many specialties. The Conover Center integrates therapies and treatments across disciplines, which include oncology, hepatology, endoscopy and interventional radiology expertise.

Generally, liver disease and liver failure (cirrhosis) patients are at high risk for surgical and anesthesia-related complications than patients with healthy livers.

Our liver surgeons work alongside dedicated anesthesiologists and specialized staff to provide:

  • General surgery in liver failure patients, such as:
    • Hernia repair
    • Gallbladder removal
  • Minimally invasive or surgical liver resection (partial hepatectomy) — removes part of the liver due to tumor or cancer. It typically is reserved for healthy patients who have good liver function and no cirrhosis.
  • Intrahepatic resections
  • Whipple (pancreaticoduodenectomy) — a complex surgery that removes a portion of the pancreas and small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct in patients with certain cancers
  • Distal pancreatectomy
  • Colon surgical resection or ablation procedures
  • Transplant
