The Integrated Operating Room of the Future

At the Peak Center and Houston Methodist Hospital, we have constructed a state-of-the-art operating room of the future.  This room contains integrated video technology, allowing us the display a number of video inputs and outputs simultaneously. We can work deep in the brain using a microscope or an endoscope and display this on one screen, while displaying virtual-reality technology on other screens to help us navigate safely in critical brain areas. Yet another screen provides input from cameras placed in the operating room lights focused on the field, while another camera provides an overview of the operating room allowing others to see exactly how surgery is unfolding.  Still other monitors can simultaneously provide input from ultrasound, x-rays, and other technologies that are used to guide surgery.  In addition, all of these modalities can be streamed via the Internet around the world, which enables the Peak Center to serve as a major teaching facility. All this leads to better outcomes and more successful surgery for our patients.  This video demonstrates the use of the integrated operating room at the Peak Center and Houston Methodist Hospital.
