Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital received accreditation in 2013 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), following a peer review process and thorough evaluation of established standards and guidelines.

There are just a little over 100 accredited programs around the country, and the Houston Methodist PCSM Fellowship program is only one of two in the greater Houston area.

The Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital program, along with its sister program at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, are unique in that both are attached academically to the same family medicine residency program - also run by Houston Methodist Hospital.

Together, they represent the largest primary care sports medicine training program in Texas

The program provides fellows with a broader understanding of the unique needs of the athletic population - setting a precedence in sports medicine training.

Under the direction of David Braunreiter, MD, CAQSM, fellows receive multidisciplinary training on the advanced diagnosis and treatment of a broad spectrum of sports medicine-related injuries and illnesses affecting all ages and skill levels - from recreational athletes and weekend warriors to Olympic and professional athletes.

PCSM Fellowship training includes:
  • Musculoskeletal sports injuries and conditions
  • Mild traumatic brain injuries
  • Computerized neuropsychological testing in concussion management
  • EMG interpretation
  • Rehabilitative medicine
  • Acute and chronic illnesses impacting training and performance
  • Impact of exercise on certain medical conditions
