Breastfeeding

Houston Methodist WIllowbrook Hospital is a Texas Ten Step facility. The Department of State Health Services awards this designation to birthing facilities that have addressed the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. These steps help mothers to exclusively breast feed their baby (breast milk only) and feel confident to continue breastfeeding successfully after they leave the hospital.

Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital encourages breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding newborns. Research has shown that breast milk can boost your baby’s immunity and is easier to digest. Breastfeeding also strengthens the bond between mother and baby. Lactation consultants and the nursing staff are available to assist mothers and babies.

Rooming-in also provides a better opportunity for exclusive breast feeding. Your baby will give you cues and senses your presence. Being immediately available will promote successful breast feeding. Also, skin-to-skin (known as Kangaroo care) facilitates not only breast feeding, but bonding itself.

During your stay on the mother/baby unit, you have the option of receiving private bedside breast feeding education and assistance from one of our experienced lactation specialists who will visit with you during your hospital stay.

At Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, we want to give you a bonding experience that provides the best start possible for your baby – and you. A complimentary breastfeeding online course is available.
