Genitourinary Pathology

The Genitourinary Pathology Section in the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at the Houston Methodist Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic services for the management of patients with genitourinary and adrenal diseases, including evaluation of biopsy and resection specimens, and assessment of histological parameters, and molecular testing.

Our senior faculty members, who all hold professor rank positions at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, include some of the most experienced and renowned pathologists in this field. A unique aspect of our practice is the team-based approach that aids us immensely in providing accurate and timely services spanning the entire spectrum of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the kidney, prostate, urinary bladder, testis and adrenal gland. All of our senior pathologists (Drs. Ayala, Ro, Shen, and Truong) have decades of experience and are well respected both in the US and internationally. They have published extensively (a combined total of more than 1,200 papers) in leading medical journals and made numerous noteworthy and landmark contributions in genitourinary pathology. They serve as editors and contributors for numerous textbooks and hold leadership positions in many professional organizations and committees in this country and across the world. Dr. Divatia, our junior faculty member and former trainee, has also undertaken subspecialty fellowship training in genitourinary pathology.

Our service manages all slides, specimens, and ancillary material necessary for diagnosis and treatment of patients undergoing genitourinary and adrenal surgical management at Houston Methodist Hospital system. Our team provides specialized diagnostic services and consultative opinions on more than 2,500 in-house cases obtained annually from the seven hospitals in our system. This consultation service provides us with the opportunity to review challenging and rare cases submitted for expert opinion.

Apart from conventional procedures for evaluation of genitourinary and adrenal specimens, we also provide specialized diagnostic services in allied areas including cytopathology, hematopathology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy as required.

In addition to clinical services, our team of genitourinary pathologists actively participates in multidisciplinary tumor boards, and didactic and teaching conferences for our trainees in pathology and urology departments. We conduct clinicopathologic research and collaborate with clinicians and translational research scientists at the Houston Methodist Research Institute and Texas Medical Center.
