Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program at Houston Methodist Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology encompasses all salient aspects of clinical neurophysiology, including EMG, Nerve Conduction, EEG, Sleep, Evoked Potentials, Intra-Operative Monitoring, and other clinically relevant testing.

We perform over 2,000 EMG studies  a year.  Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of clinical neuromuscular diseases, multiple clinical/academic conferences and interpretation of muscle biopsies, as well as participating in clinics specializing in myasthenia gravis, myotonic disorders, muscular dystrophy, and motor neuron disease.

A core component of the Neurophysiology Laboratory, where we perform 3,500 EEGs (accredited by ABRET, American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists), 400 EPs and 350 intra-operative assessments, is the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program.  This program, which the National Association of Epilepsy Centers designates as Level 4, consists of a multidisciplinary team with clinicians and researchers from neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, neuropathology, and psychiatry.  The fellow will gain exposure to all aspects of the epilepsy surgery program, including interpretation of video EEG monitoring studies, electrocorticography, functional cortical mapping, WADA testing and the inpatient and outpatient evaluation of patients with epilepsy.

Another aspect of the fellowship is rotation in Sleep Medicine.  The Sleep Disorders Center consists of a 10 bed AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) accredited laboratory. This program consists of a multidisciplinary team with members from neurology, pulmonary medicine, ENT, oral maxillofacial surgery, cardiology, psychology, and psychiatry.  The rotation includes interpretation of sleep studies and evaluation of patients in the sleep disorders clinic.

We present an outstanding opportunity for those interested in clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular disease, and epilepsy.
