James B. Hughes is Director of Development for The Methodist Hospital Research Institute. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from the University of Richmond and then completed his Masters of Music Degree in Conducting from Emory University. Following graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma towards his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in conducting, James accepted a position as Executive Director of Canterbury Choral Society, Oklahoma’s premier symphonic chorus located in Oklahoma City. He later moved to Houston to lead the Bayou City Performing Arts as its Executive Director. After ten years in the performing arts business he shifted his professional focus towards the medical and research communities by accepting a position in development with the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
In his current position, James leads the effort to build a development program in support of one of the nation’s top 20 independent research programs in domestic hospitals as measured by NIH (National Institute of Health) grant awards (the “gold standard”). James is a frequent guest speaker on best practices in portfolio development, management and stewardship.
