San Jacinto Methodist Hospital employees recently donated 131 backpacks to the Baytown Family YMCA in support of Operation Backpack. Employees voluntarily contributed to the effort within their departments, in order to provide school supplies to local youth.
“Because of the generosity of our employees, we were able to donate 131 backpacks,” said Donna Gares, president and CEO of San Jacinto Methodist. “It is our pleasure to provide these to the YMCA.”
The YMCA staff greatly appreciated the hospital’s donation.
“With this donation, we will probably be able to furnish over 300 backpacks on Saturday. We deeply appreciate everyone’s contribution,” said Lee Brillhart, associate community director of the Baytown YMCA.
Chris Aguero, a Baytown YMCA employee, was excited about all of the backpacks, which took two pickup trucks to deliver. “Usually we just get backpacks, then we fill them with school supplies people donate,” he said. “We don’t really get backpacks fully loaded like this.”
The Baytown Family YMCA estimated that more than 80 local families, with two to five children per family, will receive the backpacks at Saturday’s distribution.
