Pulmonary Function

Has your life changed because you can’t catch your breath?

Do you get short of breath with minimal exertion?

It may be time to have your lungs tested! Talk to your physician today.

The Respiratory Care Department at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital offers a wide range of noninvasive pulmonary function tests to help diagnose lung disorders. Our specially trained respiratory therapists are experienced in using state-of-the-art equipment to evaluate numerous breathing problems that could be caused by asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, sinusitis, tuberculosis, pulmonary hypertension, or other conditions.

Whether you have a persistent cough, shortness of breath or wheezing, we can guide you through a customized diagnostic care plan to determine the quantity of air you inhale, how efficiently you move that air, and how well your lungs deliver oxygen to your bloodstream.

Pulmonary Function Studies

  • Spirometry to measure the volume and flow of air that is inhaled and exhaled
  • Plethysmography to determine lung volume and airway resistance
  • Diffusion capacity to evaluate the ability of the lungs to carry gas into and out of the blood

Exercise Testing

  • Six-minute walk test with pulse oximetry or oxygen titration to measure aerobic fitness and evaluate functional exercise capacity

Laboratory Testing

  • Arterial blood gas to evaluate oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood to gauge how well the lungs are working
  • Pulse oximetry to determine the amount of oxygen in the blood

For compassionate and personalized care for your respiratory problem, call our scheduling department at 281-737-1900 to make an appointment today. A physician referral is required for pulmonary function studies.
