PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

UPCOMING EVENTS

PGY1 Program Purpose: PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced

education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Whether stepping into the role of a clinical pharmacist or transitioning to a PGY2 residency, graduates will be able to seamlessly become an integral member of a multidisciplinary patient care team, provide high-level pharmaceutical care to a vast array of patient populations, and position themselves for a role in pharmacy leadership. Through a unique combination of individually tailored clinical experiences, drug information opportunities, medication safety initiatives, and research endeavors, residents will have the opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to the pharmacy profession and its continued growth, contribute to the advancement of the medical and pharmacy literature, and develop their clinical, teaching, and leadership skills. With an expansive array of preceptors from various specialties, residents will receive unparalleled training opportunities, yet also have the freedom to practice autonomously.

Residents will train at Houston Methodist, Texas Medical Center, which is the flagship, 900-bed teaching facility in the Houston Methodist Hospital System. It has earned worldwide recognition since it opened its doors in 1919, and is ranked as the #1 hospital in Texas by U.S. News and World Report. PGY1 pharmacy residents have had the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop innovative ideas at Houston Methodist since the inception of the residency program in 1987.
