The Headache Clinic of the Department of Neurology has been evaluating headache patients since December 1989, and currently follows 1200 patients with different types of headaches. The team members include a neurologist, nurse practitioner, headache treatment coordinator and secretary. The director of the clinic is Dr. Howard S. Derman, Associate Professor of Neurology, Weill Cornell Medical Center.
The clinic utilizes the most up-to-date diagnostic procedures, including MRI, CT scan and ultrasound, and utilizes the facilities of the Houston Methodist Hospital for these procedures. Treatment modalities include medical intervention as well as relaxation techniques, including biofeedback and physical therapy. The Headache Clinic is involved with testing of experimental drugs, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, anticonvulsants and various nasal sprays for the treatment of headache.
The clinic is also involved in headache treatment protocols including botox and assessment of PFOs (patent foramen ovales) in migraine patients.
