Kenneth Podell, PhD, FACPN
Kenneth Podell, PhD

Director, Houston Methodist Concussion Center
Dr. Kenneth Podell is a board-certified neuropsychologist. Podell specializes in the assessment and treatment of individuals who have sustained brain injury or disease, with particular expertise in sports concussion, traumatic brain injury and dementia. He serves as a team neuropsychological consultant for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo and Rice University Athletics.

Howard S. Derman, MD

Medical Director, Houston Methodist Concussion Center
Dr. Howard Derman has a special interest in the treatment of concussions and other pain syndromes affecting the nervous system. He is also in several research projects, which include both the causes of concussions and programs to get athletes to return to play. Dr. Derman is a concussion specialist for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo, Houston Dash and Rice University Athletics.

Deidre Duke, ATC, LAT -
Concussion Center Liaison

Deidre Duke received her bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine with a concentration in athletic training and fitness management, with a minor in psychology from Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio. She has worked in the athletic training profession for 18 years and is passionate about concussion management, return to play, education and research. Duke’s medical knowledge and experience, coupled with her solid relationships with schools in the greater Houston area, have allowed her to provide concussion education not only to area schools, but also to youth sports. She also oversees all of the center’s ImPACT baseline testing and education efforts.

Nader A. Ayub, DO

Family and Sports Medicine
Dr. Nader Ayub is dual certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He focuses on managing both medical and non-surgical orthopedic conditions. He has experience in treating athletes of all levels as well as general medical conditions across all ages. He is a team physician for Rice University and Fort Bend ISD schools.

David Braunreiter, MD

Primary Care Sports Medicine
Dr. David Braunreiter completed his family practice residency at Family Medicine Practice of St. Louis, Missouri and his sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. His dual certification in both family medicine and sports medicine provides unique qualifications to attend to a wide array of medical and orthopedic conditions in the athletic arena. Dr. Braunreiter is the team physician for the Houston Dynamo MLS team and Katy Pope John XXIII High School.

Neuropsychologist
Dr. Veronica Burton is a board-certified neuropsychologist with extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of patients with neurological and psychological disorders. Her clinical expertise focuses on Dementia, Traumatic brain injury (TBI), Stroke and the Assessment of Spanish speakers.

Mario Dulay, PhD
Mario Dulay, PhD

Neuropsychologist
Dr. Mario Dulay Jr. conducts neuropsychological assessments on adults with stroke, tumor, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, psychiatric disorders and movement disorders. In association with Houston Methodist Concussion Center, Dr. Dulay also provides evaluation of patients of all ages who have experienced sports-related or other types of concussive injuries.

Vijay Jotwani, MD

Primary Care Sports Medicine
Dr. Vijay Jotwani attended the University of Illinois Medical School followed by his family practice residency at the University of Chicago. He then completed his sports medicine fellowship at Indiana University. He is board certified in both areas of Medicine. His focus is concussion management and non-operative orthopedic care of athletes and active people. He treats a broad range of injuries and conditions with the primary goal of returning patients to play and their active lives. Dr. Jotwani presently serves as team physician for the Houston Ballet and Rice University Athletics.

Scott Rand, MD

Primary Care Sports Medicine
Dr. Scott Rand is board certified in family medicine with certificate of added qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine. He is the director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program at Houston Methodist Willowbrook - one of only two such accredited programs in the greater Houston area and one of just 111 around the country. He is also the director of the new Methodist Human Performance Lab. His practice focuses on the overall medical care, concussion management, and nonoperative orthopedic care of athletes and active people of all ages.

Javier Rios, MD

Sports Medicine
Dr. Javier Rios is certified in sports medicine. He focuses on managing both medical and non-surgical orthopedic conditions. He has experience in treating athletes of all levels, the general active population as well as those with diseases or conditions that make an active lifestyle challenging. He provides care for several of the area high schools.

Christian Schupp, MD

Sports Medicine
Dr. Christian Schupp is a primary care sports medicine physician who is board certified in family and sports medicine. He applies the unique nonoperative sports health approach of the Houston Methodist Willowbrook primary care sports medicine team to help athletes and the active of all ages reach their sports goals through optimal health. He performs routine family medical care, provides concussion testing and management and treats a broad range of overuse injuries and arthritic conditions. He serves as team physician to high school and college sports teams, advisor to professional sports groups, and is a part of the sports medicine faculty at the Houston Methodist Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Willowbrook.

Gregory M. Seelhoefer, MD

Sports Medicine
Dr. Gregory Seelhoefer is a primary care sports medicine physician specializing in the treatment of athletes and the active of all performance levels and ages. Training in family medicine and sports medicine, he has served as team physician for area colleges, high schools and organized sports clubs – while organizing free health clinics for high school students and their families. He treats a broad range of injuries and conditions with the primary goal of returning patients to play and their active lives.

Todd W. Trask, MD

Neurosurgeon
Dr. Todd Trask’s expertise includes the treatment of brain and spinal tumors, microsurgery of cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, and stereotactic radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia. He also performs spinal surgery, including spinal reconstruction. Dr. Trask serves as the medical director of Houston Methodist Hospital Neuro ICU, and as chairman of the hospital’s neurosurgery performance improvement committee. He has a longstanding interest in experimental treatments for malignant brain tumors, and performed one of the earliest studies on the use of gene therapy in brain tumors.
