Robotic Surgery - Gynecology

Gynecologic surgery is the surgery of the female reproductive system. The standard for traditional open gynecologic surgery consists of a large incision across the lower abdomen to access the uterus and its surrounding anatomy. This large incision leads to pain and discomfort along with a long recovery time and return to normal activities. However, with a minimally invasive option, your surgeon aided by the da Vinci SI Surgical System, will only need a few small, dime-sized incisions which require only one or two stitches to close. As a result, patients can benefit in several ways including:

  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Less pain and scarring
  • Less risk of wound infection
  • Less blood loss
  • Faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activities

This less invasive option is available for many patients. Be sure to ask your physician if you are a candidate.

Surgeons may use robotic surgery to treat many gynecologic conditions, including:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic organ prolapse, especially vaginal prolapse and paravaginal defects
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Uterine fibroids

Some types of gynecologic robotic assisted surgery being performed at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital include:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
  • Myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids)
  • Oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries)
