Methodist Concussion Center adds Dr. Kenneth Podell, neuropsychologist and concussion expert
Podell most recently headed up the division of neuropsychology and served as director of The Sports Concussion Safety Program and co-director of The Concussion Clinic at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. He worked with a team of neuropsychologists in the early 1990’s to develop the ImPACT test, the most widely used computerized test for sports concussions, which is used by the NFL, NHL and MLB, and throughout the world for testing players for concussions. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system.
“Dr. Podell’s concussion management experience with professional and student athletes is unparalleled,” said Dr. Howard Derman, director of the Methodist Concussion Center and neurologist consultant for the Houston Texans and Houston Dynamo. “He not only brings solid clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of concussion, but he will also expand our community outreach initiatives to educate student athletes, coaches and parents.”
Approximately 140,000 high school students suffer concussions each year, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Podell is a board certified neuropsychologist specializing in the assessment and treatment of individuals who have sustained any type of brain injury or disease. He has particular expertise with sports-concussion, traumatic brain injury and dementia. Podell is a Fellow of The National Academy of Neuropsychology.
