Community Stroke Seminar Well Attended at Houston Methodist HospitalWillowbrook, TX - 1/8/2014
The message that stroke is the third most common cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States came through loud and clear at a recent stroke seminar hosted by Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. More than 50 people came to hear Amy Naquin-Chappel, M.D., neurologist, and learn more about their chances of having a stroke and how to prevent and treat one.
The event was sponsored by the Khurana Endowed Fellowship in loving memory of Swadesh Khurana, who passed away suddenly from a stroke in 2007. To honor her legacy, the Khurana family provided philanthropic support to advance stroke care, research and education at the hospital. Their gift enabled Houston Methodist Willowbrook to become a certified stroke center and provide continuing stroke education to the Northwest Houston community.
Risk factors that could cause a stroke, or a recurrent one, include high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and being overweight. Common signs of a stroke may include face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, sudden confusion, numbness or weakness of the leg, problems with vision, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of coordination, and severe headache for no known reason. If anyone has any of these signs of a stroke, immediately call 911 or emergency medical services. People who have had a stroke should follow up with their doctor to monitor their health and take medications as directed.
