Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital Earns Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® Recognition from The Joint Commission

Willowbrook, TX - 11/1/2013

Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital has been named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America for the second year in a row. Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital was recognized by The Joint Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions. The clinical processes focus on care for several conditions including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical outcomes.

“We are proud to receive this prestigious recognition once again from The Joint Commission that acknowledges the commitment of our staff to ensuring positive outcomes for our patients,” said Beryl Ramsey, chief executive officer of Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and senior vice president of Houston Methodist. “Patients have come to expect quality care at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, which is why we are the hospital of choice for the Northwest Houston community.”

Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is one of 1,099 hospitals in the United States earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. The ratings are based on an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2012 calendar year. The list of Top Performer organizations percent represents 33 percent of all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals reporting accountability measure performance data for 2012.

Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and each of the hospitals that were named as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures must: achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases; and have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set all applicable individual accountability measures have a performance rate of 95 percent or above. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – examples include giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients and giving antibiotics one hour before surgery.

“Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and all the Top Performer hospitals have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and they should be proud of their achievement,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and chief executive officer of The Joint Commission.

In addition to being included in today’s release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website (qualitycheck.org). The Top Performer program will be featured in the December issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Source.

Along with the stroke designation by The Joint Commission, Houston Methodist Willowbrook also has earned the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. As a recognized leader in stroke care, members of the community are invited to learn about their chances of having a stroke, and how to prevent and treat one at the free "Stroke Smart" seminar with Amy Naquin-Chappel, M.D., neurologist.
