The Spine Center – Treatment Options

Back pain is the second leading medical condition that brings patients to the doctor´s office, with 80 percent of Americans experiencing it at some point in their lives. With its widespread prevalence, back and neck pain can be difficult to properly diagnose and treat.

We believe proper diagnosis and effective treatment require a well–coordinated approach by a multidisciplinary team of experts. This is the heart of our philosophy at the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Spine Center, where you'll find everything you need to diagnose and treat your condition in a convenient location.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapists are well trained to treat back pain due to nerve and musculoskeletal problems. They utilize traction and modalities such as heat and electrical stimulation. A therapist can also design a home exercise program to help prevent future episodes of back pain.

Neurology

Neurologists are experts in distinguishing pain due to spine and nerve problems versus pain due to musculoskeletal abnormalities. Electromyography (EMG) may be used to help diagnose a neuromuscular problem.

Interventional Pain Management

A wide array of injections and nerve blocks, typically performed under live X–ray, are used by these specialists to accurately diagnose and treat pain conditions. In severe cases, medication pumps and spinal cord stimulators may be considered.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

The treatment option aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with back pain. Physiatrists specialize in diagnosing spinal problems through many different methods, such as a comprehensive clinical exam and objective testing that includes EMG and spinal injections among others. Physiatrists attempt to restore optimal function and quality of life to people with injuries to the spine and muscles, and allow for rehabilitation and healing.

Surgery

Most patients with back pain do not require surgery. However, when surgery is necessary, new, minimally invasive techniques yield remarkable success in reducing pain, preventing permanent injury, and restoring function.
