Patient Story: Felicia Galloway

Felicia Galloway

Two weeks after 40-year-old Felicia Galloway had her third child, she began experiencing severe back pain. She thought she had pulled a muscle, but quickly learned her situation was serious.

Doctors diagnosed postpartum cardiomyopathy, a rare condition in which the heart starts failing in the last month of pregnancy, or up to five months postpartum. "I had a dissection of the coronary artery, and unbeknownst to me, two heart attacks," Galloway said. "I saw my baby for nine days and didn't see him or my other kids again for two months."

Galloway spent the first month at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and credits those doctors and staff with keeping her alive. She was then transferred to the Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center, where doctors implanted a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

"Thank goodness for the LVAD, because it completely brought me around," Galloway said. "Before receiving it, my condition was getting worse and my organs were beginning to shut down. It's now been eight months and my life is great. I am so grateful that I came through this and that I can take care of my husband and children. That is all I've ever wanted to do."
