Stories from Our Patients
When Jennifer was diagnosed with angiosarcoma in October 2008, her doctors began searching for an expert in the field of heart tumors. "Naturally, the name Michael Reardon came up immediately," she recalls. When Jennifer called his office regarding a consult, she found herself speaking with Dr. Reardon himself later that very same day—and just over one week later, she was sitting in his office at Houston Methodist Hospital.
"That first consultation with Dr. Reardon was very comforting," Jennifer says. "The worst part of being in that situation is fear of the unknown, and he was able to alleviate a lot of my stress." In the summer of 2009, Dr. Reardon connected Jennifer with MD Anderson Cancer Center and Dr. Monika Leja, and shortly thereafter, he performed a successful removal of the tumor.
"I just cannot say enough wonderful things about this team," Jennifer says over a year later. "Not only are they all outstanding in terms of expertise, but they’re quality people as well. They cared for me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They simply excel at everything they do."
When Kenyatta began experiencing dizziness at work in 2009 and consulted a doctor to find out the cause, he embarked on a journey that would change his life. After numerous tests, a biopsy revealed a tumor between his heart and lung—a noncancerous tumor, but one that had the potential to spread if it were not removed.
Kenyatta’s local cardiologist referred him to the Heart Tumor Program at Houston Methodist Hospital to begin discussing surgery. "I heard from numerous people that if the President of the United States had this condition, this is where he’d come for treatment," he recalls. "My family and I did a lot of research, and Dr. Reardon’s name came up everywhere we looked—he wrote the book on heart tumor surgery."
One year after his surgery, Kenyatta is back at work, feeling well, and enjoying life with his daughters, age 9 and 3. "What impresses me about this team is not only their professionalism, but how personable they are," he notes. "They follow up with me regularly, and they’re always more than helpful in answering any question I can come up with. I consider myself lucky to have found the right place at the right time."
