Each year 25,000 Americans die from acute aortic dissection, one of several aortic conditions that need immediate and accurate medical attention. For every hour a dissection is left untreated, mortality increases between 1 and 2 percent.
As leaders in high-risk cardiac care, the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center created the Acute Aortic Treatment Center to provide rapid care to patients with acute aortic syndromes, including:
- Aortic dissection
- Aortic aneurysm rupture
- Intramural hematoma
- Penetrating ulcers
- Acute aortic occlusion
- Aortic transaction
Through a collaborative effort between the physicians, radiologists, anesthesiologists and cardiovascular surgeons of Houston Methodist Hospital Emergency Department, we can provide 24-hour access to a team capable of diagnosing, assessing and treating patients with acute aortic syndromes. Since many patients never make it to the operating room, we created this treatment center to focus on:
- Rapid transportation,
- Rapid diagnosis, and
- Rapid introduction of therapy for patients with acute aortic syndromes.
The Acute Aortic Treatment Center also educates both patients and physicians on acute aortic syndromes, with an emphasis on getting patients to the Center as quickly as possible should an acute aortic condition arise.
