Your heart has four valves—tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral and aortic—that keep the blood flowing in the correct direction.
If one or more of the heart's valves stops working correctly (due to birth defects, infections or other causes), your heart may have to work harder to pump blood, which can lead to other complications.
