If your kidneys begin to fail due to chronic kidney disease or the treatment for kidney cancer, your doctor may recommend a transplant, in which a healthy kidney is transferred from a donor’s body to yours. Because the body can function with one kidney, kidney donors usually go on to live normal healthy lives after their donation.
The Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center has one of the largest kidney transplant programs in Texas, with the best patient outcomes of any program in the Texas Medical Center.
In 2010 alone, Houston Methodist surgeons performed more than 180 kidney transplant surgeries—nearly three times our total from just a few years ago—including more than 80 from living donors.
