Methodist Sugar Land Hospital launches online directory of Fort Bend support groups and service organizations

Sugar Land, TX - 10/5/2012

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is launching a new community resource directory, designed to provide residents of Fort Bend and surrounding areas with information about support groups, charitable organizations and other providers of important health and human services.

The directory, available online by visiting MethodistSugarLand.com and clicking on the Community Support Groups button, is the result of an extensive effort by the hospital’s Spiritual Care and Values Integration Department.  Associate Staff Chaplain Nancy Penney led the project, meeting with area clergy and non-profit representatives to collect information on relevant services and develop the directory.

Penney said the resource list will provide a number of long-term benefits to the community, including:

  • Affirming the pastoral care already being offered by area churches, temples, synagogues and community organizations
  • Providing a "one-stop shop" for area residents to find the information and help they need
  • Allowing area groups to reach out to new participants who are in need of support or assistance

“People often turn to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for information or assistance because they know us and trust us,” said Bill Bross, Director of Spiritual Care and Values Integration.  “And while the hospital provides a number of support services related to grief and dealing with illness, we recognize there are also tremendous resources available throughout the community.  Caring for the spirit is central to health and healing, and this is one way we can extend our department’s efforts beyond the hospital walls.”

“Area clergy and representatives of charitable organizations were eager to be listed in the new directory,” Penney said. “For churches, it can be difficult to reach those outside of their own congregations, and many community groups have limited funds to increase awareness about the services they offer.”

“Everyone I spoke with was grateful to be included because they realize the directory offers an opportunity to be more visible and reach more individuals and families,” Penney said.  “They are glad to partner with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital because they see the directory as a valuable tool that can bring the community closer together.  It’s a unique use of technology to help groups connect with those in need.”
