Renowned Stem Cell Researcher Irving Weissman To Speak at TMHRI

Houston, TX - 9/29/2009

HOUSTON (Sept. 29, 2009) – Irving L. Weissman, M.D., director of the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, will deliver a seminar titled "Normal and Neoplastic Stem Cells," in honor of The Methodist Hospital Research Institute’s first annual Cockrell Foundation Award in Clinical or Translational Research on Nov 11, 2009.

Weissman’s research focuses on the biology and evolution of blood-forming and brain-forming stem cells and progenitor cells. His pioneering work with stem cells has led to his founding of several successful biomedical companies.

Weissman is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy, and the American Association of Arts and Sciences. He has received the Kaiser Award for Excellence in Preclinical Teaching, the Pasarow Award in Cancer Research and the Outstanding Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health. He also holds the 2004 New York Academy of Medicine Award for distinguished contributions to biomedical research.
