The Methodist Neurological Institute's Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center received the American Heart Association's (AHA's) Get with the Guidelines (GWTG)-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. Methodist received this honor for its commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
Methodist achieved at least 12 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all GWTG-Stroke Quality Achievement Indicators. These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation.
"We know that time lost is brain lost, so rapid medical care for our patients is of utmost importance," said Dr. David Chiu, medical director, Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center. "Our comprehensive stroke team not only treats patients, but we also educate patients and family members on how to prevent a stroke from happening again."
