Houston Surgeons at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital Perform First Robotic Hysterectomy in Northwest Houston

Houston, TX - 10/15/2010

A specially trained surgical team performs the first robotic surgery in northwest Houston using the advanced technology of the da Vinci® Surgical System in the state-of-the-art surgery center at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital

Local media gathered to report on the cutting edge procedure, a robotic hysterectomy, which was among the first performed at the hospital’s Willowbrook campus.

Dr. Chuong Pham, a physician of obstetrics and gynecology on staff at Methodist Willowbrook, performed the robotic-assisted minimally invasive procedure in order to remove fibroid tumors.  The patient was able to return to work within days following the procedure.

Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is among the first in Houston to perform robotic surgery using the da Vinci SI robot, a three-armed surgical assistant that provides magnified 3-D view and enhanced access to the operating field.  From the robotic console, the surgeon is able to maneuver more easily in even the tightest, most delicate spaces – guiding fine instruments with maximum precision and control and posing minimal disruption to surrounding organs, nerves and other soft tissue.

According to Dr. Pham the three main benefits of a minimally invasive robotic surgery include a more rapid recovery, less pain and increased precision.

“The incisions in this type of surgery, approximately 1-2 cm, are much smaller than those required in open surgery.  As a result, we are not disrupting as much muscle tissue to get to the surgery site and there is less scarring,” said Dr. Pham, who specializes in cervical dysplasia, gynecologic surgery, hysteroscopic surgery and pelvic disease.

“It is really incredible how the robotic arms and clamps move with human-like naturalness and refined precision.  We are fortunate to be able to offer this type of less invasive surgery to patients,” he added.

Methodist Willowbrook Hospital offers robotic surgery for a number of common as well as complex conditions including hysterectomy, myomectomy, prostectomy, bariatric surgery, cancer surgery and more.

Methodist Willowbrook is a 251-bed, nonprofit tertiary care hospital, which is part of The Methodist Hospital System.  It is the mission of physicians and staff to provide high quality, cost-effective health care that delivers the best value to patients in a spiritual environment of caring.
