Methodist Willowbrook Hospital Presents Two Awards at EMS Appreciation EventWillowbrook, TX - 6/21/2013
Methodist Willowbrook Hospital recently hosted a luncheon and ceremony to recognize the life-saving efforts of area emergency medical services personnel. The event included presenting two awards, the Quickest Door to Balloon Time 2012 and Fastest Door to tPA Time 2012 - the Khurana EMS Stroke Award. Both awards were presented to Cypress Creek Emergency Medical Services (CCEMS). This was the first year the hospital has presented the awards.
It is important to the Methodist Willowbrook Hospital family to take this opportunity to recognize all our local EMS providers for the service they provide to in our community,” said Beryl Ramsey, chief executive officer at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and senior vice president of The Methodist Hospital System. “It is an honor to partner with them in caring for the greater Northwest Houston community.
By collaborating with emergency medical services companies like CCEMS, the hospital has been able to shorten treatment times for patients experiencing a certain type of heart attack called a ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI. A STEMI requires fast action because permanent damage will occur if blood flow is not restored to the heart. The American Heart Association recommends that people having a heart attack should have artery-opening surgery called angioplasty within 90 minutes of first being seen by paramedics. The door-to-balloon time at Methodist Willowbrook averages about 60 minutes.
The hospital is a Level II stroke center that recently earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Achiever Award, an advanced level of recognition acknowledging hospitals for consistent compliance with stroke quality measures. Tissue plasminogen activator, tPA, is a clot-busting drug that is commonly used within hours of diagnosing an ischemic stroke to dissolve blood clots and restore blood flow to the brain. The stroke award is in memory of Swadesh Khurana by the Khurana family of Houston to honor the memory of their beloved wife and mother. There is also a healing garden named for Swadesh Khurana at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.
