Location: The Methodist Hospital, Houston, TX
Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year surgical clerkship
Description: A 4 week rotation that provides a broad exposure to the evaluation and management of general surgery patients. Case mix is weighted towards patients with malignant and benign disorders of the pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, breast and endocrine organs. Students function as sub-interns, becoming integral members of the surgical team including faculty and multi-level residents. Clinical experience will occur in The Methodist Hospital, a 1000 bed tertiary referral academic medical center in the Texas Medical Center with primary affiliation with Weill Cornell Medical School.
- Develop clinical problem solving skills in the evaluation and management of acute surgical diseases.
- Provide a broad exposure to operative techniques and an opportunity to develop technical skills.
- Provide practical clinical experience in preparation for a surgical internship.
Learning Experience: Students will participate in the clinical and educational activities of one of the General Surgery teaching services. This includes faculty teaching rounds, conferences, journal club, and all aspects of clinical care provided by the service.
