How are the residents selected?
Resident selection involves an application process and an onsite interview. Interviews are held in January and February of each year. Participation in the Resident Matching Program is mandatory. An early commitment process is available for TMH PGY1 residents.
How is the resident’s year organized?
The first month of the residency involves orientation during which the resident will spend time training in various pharmacy and patient care areas learning the pharmacy and hospital computer systems, becoming BLS and ACLS certified (if not already), exploring potential research projects, and identifying the ACPE accredited program topic to be presented during the residency year.
Clinical rotations are based on calendar months and may be 1-2 months in duration. A research month may be scheduled based upon the magnitude and number of extra projects taken on by the resident in addition to appropriate progression of clinical experience. The month of December is reserved for attendance at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and 1 week of central pharmacy staffing.
What is involved in the staffing requirement?
The resident will provide weekend clinical pharmacy coverage in the internal medicine patient care areas every 3 weeks. No night shifts are required.
How are the residents evaluated?
Regular verbal and written feedback is provided to the resident throughout each rotation and during the year. The resident is provided with a list of goals and objectives for each rotation and completes a self-evaluation on these at the end of each rotation. The preceptor completes a final evaluation of the resident during the rotation as well. The evaluation forms are developed from ASHP’s Residency Learning System (RLS) using the ASHP on-line “Resitrak” system. On a quarterly basis, the Residency Program Director provides the resident with an evaluation of their progress. The objective of the frequent evaluations is to provide constructive feedback to the resident on their progress to maximize the opportunity for learning.
What teaching opportunities are available?
The Methodist Hospital maintains an affiliation with Weill Cornell Medical College and New York Presbyterian Hospital and is a major clinical teaching site for students from the Colleges of Pharmacy at the University of Houston, the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M, University of Incarnate Word, and Texas Southern University. TMH residents have opportunities to assist in the teaching of students from multiple disciplines including pharmacy, medicine, nursing, and physician assistants. Opportunities for didactic teaching are available within the local colleges of pharmacy. The specialty residents will also work closely with and mentor the PGY1 - pharmacy practice residents. A teaching certificate program is offered as part of the TMH and University of Houston College of Pharmacy Affiliation for residents interested in such a training experience.
Is support provided for residents seeking Board Certification?
PGY2 residents qualify for and are highly encouraged to take the Board Certification exam for Pharmacotherapy. Although financial compensation is not provided, a study group is organized in July for those interested in sitting for this exam. This group meets weekly to review questions and answers on assigned readings which are built into the residency program as topic discussions. Each year, the study groups have been very successful in achieving Board Certification status.
Are all of the residents from Texas or Texas schools of pharmacy?
No, The Methodist Hospital considers all residency applicants and strives to obtain diversity in the educational backgrounds of the residents.
Do residents receive support to attend professional meetings?
Financial support is provided for all required meetings (ASHP MCM, Midwestern States Residency Conference) including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) fall meeting. Support includes hotel accommodations, airfare, conference registration, and meals.
Do residents have library privileges?
Residents have access to The Texas Medical Center/Houston Academy of Medicine (TMC/HAM) Library (located across the street from the hospital). Residents also have access to over 4,000 on-line journals through the TMC/HAM Library. The Micromedex, Clinical Pharmacology and Up-To-Date systems are available through the hospital’s intranet.
Do residents have access to the Internet and e-mail?
Each resident is assigned a computer and phone at their own desk. All computers have internet access and email capabilities. Residents will also be issued a portable phone for hospital use.
What types of positions have former residents accepted?
Our residency programs produce highly skilled pharmacists capable of many different types of positions when they graduate. Several of our residency graduates (PGY1/PGY2) have attained a diversity of positions including clinical specialists, academic faculty, and pharmacy management. Previous residents have included a former ASHP President, residency program directors, director of pharmacy, local pharmacy chapter officers, and other successful leadership positions.
What is the average cost for housing in Houston?
You should expect to pay $700 – $1200/month for a one or two bedroom apartment if you live in the Texas Medical Center area. Housing in outlying areas is less expensive but results in longer commute times. Most residents choose to live closer to the hospital.
What is there to do in Houston?
Houston is fourth largest city in the nation and as such has an abundance of recreational opportunities. Evenings out can include professional sporting events such as the Houston Astros, Dynamos, Texans, Rockets, or Comets games. Discounted tickets are often available since Methodist is the sponsor hospital for many of the professional teams. An abundance of local multi-cultural activities exist such as the season of festivals as well as taking in the Opera, Ballet, Symphony or upcoming Broadway musicals.
