Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

The Department of Anesthesiology provides the intensivist physicians, physician assistants and advanced nurse practioners to The Cardiovascular Intensive Care of Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. Under the leadership of Medical Director Faisal Masud, M.D., F.C.C.P., the interdisciplinary staff of the 40 bed cardiac surgical unit provides care for patients who have had one or more of the following surgical procedures: coronary artery by-pass, cardiac valve repair or replacement, aortic aneurysm repair (thoracic or abdominal), heart and lung transplant and various other vascular/thoracic surgical procedures. Assist devices that may be utilized in the care of this patient population include: continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)- including Thoratec, Novacor, DeBakey, Heartmate, Biomedicus, Abiomed, and ECMO (extra corporeal membrane oxygenation).

The majority of the patients in the CVICU have advanced hemodynamic monitoring and vasoactive medication support. In collaboration with an intensivist team, the core patient care team includes the patient's physician, nurses, patient care assistants and unit secretaries, supported by a group of specialists, which include clinical nurse educator, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, respiratory and occupational therapists, cardiac rehabilitation therapists, nutritionists, and chaplains.

Dr. Masud graduated from Rawalpindi Medical College in Pakistan. Following an internship at Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia, he completed his anesthesiology residency at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey, serving as chief resident during his senior year. Dr. Masud trained in cardiac anesthesia at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by a fellowship in critical care anesthesia at Duke University.

In 2002, Dr. Masud was named Director of Anesthesia Critical Care at Houston Methodist Hospital, where his leadership skills have resulted in great improvements in patient care and clinical outcomes. Dr. Masud is an active researcher with Houston Methodist , Weill Cornell and Baylor College of Medicine, with a special interest in improving care for critically ill patients. Additionally, he educates and mentors medical students, residents, fellows, visiting residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and international observers, and started the first FCCS course at Houston Methodist . Dr. Masud is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, in Critical Care and in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.

Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Anakara Sukumaran M.D., Michael Zwillman M.D., Drew Ludwig, D.O. and Rick Day, M.D. specialize in the care of critically ill patients in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit. This team of physicians provides intensive, coordinated care to NICU patients and perform bedside procedures for invasive monitoring in critically ill patients.

These physicians work closely with each patient's physician and continually monitor the patient and their treatment plans for the day and immediate future. In addition to the intensivist physician, the multi-disciplinary team includes, clinical pharmacologist, respiratory therapist, rehabilitation specialist, medical social worker, discharge planner, and other specialists, as needed.
