I am excited to tell you of the merits of residency education at San Jacinto Methodist. We are the only residency within our hospital but are part of Houston Methodist, Graduate Medical Education Department. This gives us opportunity in Baytown to access many learning opportunities without competition, but access to enhanced learning rotations. Our resident body is diverse, energetic and engaged. We believe in the strength of variety and of having self-directed learners to capitalize on our enhanced learning environment. A number of our residents are single, many are married and some have families so we are dedicated to providing a supportive environment for all to get through the demands of residency. The unifying trait is a desire to work as a team, and a dedication to active learning.
We have a group of 8 full-time family medicine faculty who teach in inpatient and outpatient settings with a combined experience of more than a century. We have expertise in clinic care, maternity care and inpatient care and are all committed teachers. You will find each of us make an effort to be available both physically and emotionally. Sound Physicians employs 8 full-time hospitalists to provide residents with 1:1 in-house 24 hour care. Residents are active throughout the hospital including critical care. Similarly we work with 4 pediatricians from Texas Children’s Hospital who supervise the inpatient care of newborns and children here at SJMH. There are also 7 local OB-GYN physicians who provide 24 hour in-house OB care. Finally, we have a dedicated group of private Emergency physicians who excel in teaching residents. Other specialty rotations and services are led by specialists who enjoy teaching and contact with residents.
Our facility gives us "the best of both worlds". We are 30 miles from the world-renown Texas Medical Center. If we need the services of a sub-specialist, we can access them here or by referral, yet we enjoy the atmosphere of a hospital that is primary care oriented. Our location gives us an excellent cost-of living and also many choices of places to live. Approximately half of residents live within our community, while some others choose to commute from Houston or nearby communities.
Legacy Community Health is the Federally Qualified Health Center which is the teaching clinic for the residency. It is attached to the hospital providing a comprehensive set of outpatient services in an environment where residents are partners with faculty to give comprehensive care. It is part of a network of clinics in Houston and East Texas which are able to give a host of different services to patients of all means. Each resident is given a laptop to enhance their learning as well as to document outpatient visits with Centricity Electronic Health Record. Residents learn how to be a Patient Centered Medical Home and even have a rotation dedicated to learning office management and Process Improvement.
Words which describe our residency are, teamwork, support, excitement, humor, and high standards of excellence. Residents, staff, even medical students are involved in our continuing improvement toward the stated mission of helping our community. We value feedback, constructive criticism, and encourage active learning at every opportunity while delivery the finest medical care possible in one of the most volatile industries of our time. If you are chosen to join us, you will have the opportunity to help build on the dream.
