Dr. Leveque received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1981. He then completed a residency in pathology and a fellowship in transfusion medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Leveque remained at the Medical Branch as the director of the Blood Bank until 1990 when he joined the faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas as an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology.
Dr. Leveque is a clinical pathologist with subspecialty certification in transfusion medicine. His current responsibilities include direction of a donor center with fixed and mobile sites, an apheresis center, and a transfusion service that provides for active cardiovascular surgery, transplant, and oncology service lines. Dr. Leveque's research interests are focused on outcomes studies that assess strategies to reduce bleeding and initiate healing in injury and surgery, thereby reducing the demand for blood products. His current studies specifically evaluate the use of various drugs and growth factors including basic pancreatic trypsin inhibitors (BPTIs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
