Houston Methodist Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology
Director of Houston Methodist Ob/Gyn Residency
Director of Graduate Medical Education Committee,
Houston Methodist Hospital — Houston

Thank you for your interest in The Houston Methodist Ob/Gyn Residency Program. Our primary objective is to train and educate excellent ob/gyn physicians, equipped for a career in general obstetrics and gynecology, entering a subspecialty, or academic medicine. Since graduating from residency 16 years ago, I have been involved in this residency program, and currently am going into my 10th year as program director. The residency program has a rich history, initially under the sponsorship of St Joseph Hospital for 65 years, and under Houston Methodist Hospital since 2005. The oldest ob/gyn residency in the state of Texas, the program has always been fully accredited and has never failed to fill in the match.

Our residency is a blend of a community and university program, with the strengths of 5 different community hospitals and the incredible clinical volume represented therein, and the academic affiliations and educational strengths of a university. We have close ties with three different medical schools and sponsor a minimally invasive ob/gyn fellowship, as well as co-sponsor a gynecologic oncology fellowship together with the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. We have all the subspecialties represented on our faculty and engage actively in research. Over the past four years, we have placed graduates in their first choice in fellowships in MFM, Gyn Oncology, and REIF.

My philosophy is to provide a structured learning environment to guide resident education, give regular and meaningful feedback, allow autonomy while ensuring adequate supervision to safeguard patient safety, and frame the entire setting in a supportive and encouraging environment. The program is close-knit and friendly and yet there is high accountability.

The resident is ultimately responsible for his/her education and professional growth. While we will provide the tools, the patients and simulators, the educational materials, and the environment for your growth, you will only become the physician commensurate to the effort put forth. Our residents consistently score in the 85th percentile on the CREOG in-training examination, have a 97% written and oral board pass rate over the past 10 years. They are successful in reaching their future endeavors whether that goal is subspecialty fellowship, private practice, or academic practice.

I see my role as vitally important, and I am humbled by the trust extended by our excellent faculty and superb residents. To this end, I am responsible for ensuring that our residency program delivers the educational and training opportunities necessary for you to develop into a skilled ob/gyn physician. This oversight deals with faculty complement, rotation schedule, hospital and call assignment, and also a safe and supportive learning environment. In return for the excellent training that our program provides to you, we ask that you strive for excellence, putting forth your own best efforts.

After learning more about our residency program through our website, I think you will be hard pressed to find another program that matches the breadth of clinical volume, educational environment, and faculty commitment and quality. Houston Methodist Hospital is world renowned for its premier patient care, and committed to excellence in education and research. We are also committed promoting valuable research experience for our residents to match their professional goals.

Please keep us in mind as you consider your future options and we'll look forward to working with you in the future.

With best regards,
