Department of Radiology

The Department of Radiology research program evaluates the role of imaging (including chest radiographs, CT and PET/CT) in lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies.  Lung cancer screening including the detection and characterization of cancers on low dose CT screening examinations is a special focus on the department.  Reginald Munden, MD, Chair of the Department of Radiology, was a site investigator for the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) which showed a 20% reduction in lung cancer mortality using low dose CT screening.  He is active in continued analysis of the data from the NLST and is a member of committees to develop recommendations and guidelines for lung cancer screening, including most recently, the ACR committee for development of LungRads guidelines.  Additional research interests include the assessment of tumors response to therapy including anatomic and functional analysis of imaging.
