What is a Clinical Residency Program?
CAATE defines the mission of a post-professional athletic training residency to advance the preparation of an athletic training practitioner through a planned program of clinical and didactic education in a specialized area utilizing an evidence-based approach to enhance patient care.
Who is eligible to apply to the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Athletic Training Residency?
Any athletic trainer with a passion for sports medicine and rehabilitation and meets the minimum eligibility requirements stated above for application is welcome to apply. New graduates are encouraged to apply.
I don’t have my license yet, can I still apply to the Athletic Training Residency?
Yes, residents do not need to be licensed to apply for the residency. However, since residents will be full-time employees engaged in direct athlete care, residents must have a Texas License of Athletic Training (LAT) AND Board of Certification (BOC) by the start of the program.
How many residents are accepted each year?
The program typically accepts several residents each year. The number of residents is determined by need and growth of the program.
Where will I be working?
Residents will be assigned to our Sugar Land location for the entire year. Sugar Land residents work in close proximity to our sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons. Residents will also be assigned to one local high school for the entire year.
What kind of resources will I have to assist my independent learning process?
As full-time employees of Houston Methodist Hospital, the resident will have full access to the Houston Methodist Hospital computers, electronic library systems, and other necessary educational equipment. This system allows access to one of the largest online health and medical libraries available.
What is the salary for the resident?
As a full-time employee of Houston Methodist Sugar Land, residents will receive a very competitive residency salary and will be eligible for the following benefits:
Will I be able to work a part-time job as well?
The demands of the residency program are quite intense and can be time-consuming. Effective time management will be an important characteristic of each resident. Although we cannot mandate against the resident working a second job, we strongly discourage it. Residents will typically work between 45-50 hours per week, on average.
Does the hospital provide any housing or transportation benefits?
The hospital does not provide assistance with housing or transportation.
