The vascular surgery fellows are required to attend the following conferences, which provide an excellent learning opportunity and fulfill the core competencies of a vascular surgery training requirement.
The Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference is held at 7 a.m. every other Tuesday. Students, residents, fellows and faculty attend the M&M conference, where surgical cases from the previous two weeks are listed and reviewed, as are complications and deaths occurring during those two weeks.
Basic Science Lecture Series
This series of basic didactic lectures in vascular surgery is held at 7:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. The lectures cover all topics in the standard textbook of vascular surgery in a 24-month period. The lectures are presented by the vascular surgery faculty.
Clinical Science Lecture Series
This series of basic didactic lectures in clinical vascular surgery topics is held at 7:30 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month. The lectures cover all topics in the standard textbook of vascular surgery in a 24-month period. The lectures are presented by the vascular surgery faculty.
Endovascular Masters Conference
This series of lectures in clinical vascular surgery topics is held at 7:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. The lectures cover an array of topics to teach endovascular surgery in each specific vascular bed, such as aortic surgery and aortic endografting.
The Ultrasound Curriculum Conference is a 12-week series held at 7 a.m. every Wednesday during the first 12 weeks of the academic year. The lectures cover all topics in the Noninvasive Vascular Diagnosis: A Practical Guide to Therapy book. This lecture is presented by one of the vascular faculty.
Journal Club Conference
The Journal Club conferences are held at 7 a.m. on the last Tuesday of every other month. Pertinent articles published in recent journals related to vascular surgery or endovascular therapy are assigned to vascular fellows for discussion. Critical analysis and appraisal of these published articles are performed with a goal to gain better understanding of literature review and research methodology.
Michael E. DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center Grand Rounds
Learn more about our regularly scheduled grand rounds, held at 8 a.m. every Thursday, with one day dedicated exclusively to cardiovascular topics. Invited speakers include visiting professors from around the country, as well as faculty from the Michael E. DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center at Houston Methodist. It is a multidisciplinary conference attended by vascular surgeons, cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, faculty, residents, fellows and students.
Vascular Surgery Ultrasound Conference
The Vascular Surgery Conference is held at 8 a.m. every Friday at 8:00 a.m. This conference is attended by faculty, fellows, residents, and students where interesting vascular ultrasound cases are discussed. Pertinent didactic presentations are given by vascular ultrasonographers, vascular surgery fellows or faculty.
Vascular Surgery Case Presentation Conference
This conference is held at 7 a.m. every Thursday. Interesting cases are presented by the fellows and discussed with the faculty in attendance. Previously assigned mock practice questions are also discussed to prepare fellows for the qualifying and certifying examinations by the American Board of Vascular Surgery.
Vascular Surgery Fellows Research Conference
The Fellow Research Conferences are held at 7 a.m. on the last Tuesday of every other month, alternating with the Journal Club. Fellows discuss their current research projects with the vascular faculty.
Texas Medical Center Vascular Surgery Skills Course
The Texas Medical Center Vascular Surgery Skills Course is held from 8 a.m.-12 noon the first Friday of every month. This course teaches basic and advanced open and endovascular techniques in MITIE using dry and wet labs, simulators and cadavers.
